Good Samaritan Mentor Update

My Fellow Mentors, Former Mentors or Willing Mentors (with no one to mentor....have been there!),

Rich,  from Good Samaritan Shelter has voluntarily reduced his hours which will prevent him from overseeing the Mentors Program at Good Sam.

In light of that, I volunteered to do two things:

a. To email you once a month, perhaps including a story or reflection of some kind or another.

b. To gather us/mentors together every other month over dinner at the Bookworm Building (822 Main Street, on the grounds of Phoenixville Hospital) to simply catch up,  trade stories, share experiences, exchange ideas and to pray, quietly or out loud, for the residents with whom we are engaged.

A quick story about Al

I just got a text from Al (not his actual name) the resident  that I visit with monthly explaining that work requires him to miss our dinner tonight.  I affirmed Al for contacting me, as that is a big step forward for him.  We hope to connect tomorrow night if his job doesn't require Al to be out.

To get a panoramic view

Anyway, I have had just about every kind of resident over the years.  To be honest, I often end up  disappointed,  but occasionally the resident I am mentoring 'gets it' and begins to make real progress vocationally, spiritually and relationally. Al seems to be doing great, but I've learned to I make it a point to check in with Tim Barr each month to compare notes and make sure that what 'seems' to be happening is actually happening so that my relationship with him and our conversations are properly informed.   For those of you who are mentoring someone presently (or if you plan to mentor someone in the future), I'd encourage you to check in with Tim regularly to see if there is anything you need to be aware of as you befriend/mentor one of the residents.  Tim can offer a panoramic view that can in turn, prove invaluable.

Anyway, could you do 3 things for me?  Could you email me at greg.porter@danielfoundation.net to

1. let me know if you are receiving this email.

2. let me know if you are mentoring anyone presently and if so, who.

3. let me know if any of these dates work for dinner for you in May:  Tue May 7, Wed May 8, Thur May 9, Mon May 13, Thur May 16, Mon May 20, Tue May 21 or Wed May 22.

Thx Everyone!

Greg Porter
