Religion? ...Okay, so by now you may be asking ... “Greg, is this whole Daniel Foundation thing really just a front for some sort of subtle and subversive religious agenda? Is the Daniel Foundation a religious organization? Are you religious?” No. Not in the classical sense of the word. Yes. I am a seminary graduate and yes, I still believe in God. And yes, I draw wisdom and strength from the Christian faith and its spiritual disciplines through life’s many peaks and valleys. However, much as I love many religious people, I am not always comfortable around them. I believe that most mean well and live lives that are far more selfless and heroic than mine. It’s just that religious folks often seem to have the God thing pretty well sewn up. The problem is, so far as I can tell, Jesus of Nazareth (JoN) doesn’t really want to be sewn up. He seems downright unsew-able up-able. Too vast. Too fascinating. Too paradoxical. Too everything. Maybe that’s why he seemed to encourage asking, seeking and knocking. He seems to prefer intrigued people to any other. The problem with having JoN sown up, is that there remains no further reason to ask, seek or knock. Why explore any further that which has been exhaustively investigated, categorized and systematized? All that’s left to do is to defend. It’s hard to ask, seek and knock around defensive people. Perhaps you have come to the same conclusion. So ... If you are intrigued with JoN and want someone to explore him with you, I’m available. In the end, it’s up to you. |
